Recipe for Gwen Conley:
Begin with a Bachelor’s in Biology, add 18 months of sensory training specialized in food, beverage, beer, and spirits, then sprinkle with some descriptive wine sensory training at UC Davis and you get to where she is now; the Quality Assurance and Sensory Director at Fly Dog Brewery and more importantly, this week’s Thursday Thirsty Girl.
A former Biology teacher, Environmental Chemist, Microbiologist, Flavor Panel Leader for a major packaging corporation, and (currently the) Quality Assurance and Sensory Director for Flying Dog Brewery.
Gwen has also sat as judge at Great American Beer Festival, World Beer Cup, and North American Beer Awards and been an Instructor at the American Brewer’s Guild teaching Quality and Microbiology Flavor and Sensory Presenter at the Master Brewer’s Association’s national and regional meetings, as well as a Sensory workshop at the American Society of Brewing Chemist’s national conference.
What makes Gwen a Thirsty Girl is that she thinks she has “the best job in the world.” Not only is she in charge of the CSI Department of the brewery (aka Beer Police) but is dubbed the “Sensory Goddess” outside the laboratory. Her Sensory Goddess role includes flavor training, food pairings, beer dinners, and anything else that entails beer and food It’s a no hard life for this week’s Thursday Thirsty Girl.
